This Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs lesson activity focuses on the First Confiscation Act of 1861. The Act allowed for the confiscation of Confederate property, including "contrabands" thought to be used for insurrection purposes. Contrabands were formerly enslaved people who escaped to Union lines. The lesson activity includes the first Confiscation Act (primary source), the transcription, a description of the Act and source dependent questions to help students analyze the source document.
