Chronicling America presents a April 17, 1878 article from The Daily Gazette newspaper that provided an account of Richard H. Cain's appeal to African Americans in the South to "improve their condition by emigration to Africa." Cain was a free born Black man from Virginia who became a pastor, entrepreneur and Congressman (R-SC). The article stated that emigration to Liberia was a business enterprise and "is the first step of what may turn out to be the Christianization and civilization of Africa [...]" and the "solving of the destiny of the African race in America[n]."
