Chronicling America presents a brief January 4, 1882 article from the The Salt Lake Herald newspaper on a Richard H. Cain's lawsuit against the Galveston, Houston, and Louisiana Railroad Company. Cain was a free born Black man from Virginia who became a pastor, entrepreneur and Congressman (R-SC). According to the article, Cain and his wife were suing the company for $20,000 in damages for refusing them "the privilege of riding in a first-class coach" after the company had already sold them the tickets.
