Historical Letter

The Library of Congress features an 1864 historical letter, written by James M. Ashley to an unidentified member of the House of Representatives, that appeals to the unidentified member's opposition to the13th Amendment--which abolished slavery and involuntary servitude except in cases where it is used as punishment for a crime. Ashley calls for the individual to attend the session in which the amendment will be voted on and for them to call upon the press in their state to influence state wide support for the amendment.
