Description
The Library of Congress presents an 1865 historical letter, written by Governor Thomas E. Bramlette (WP-KY) to President Abraham Lincoln, that provides an account of Kentucky's rejection of the 13th Amendment--which abolished slavery and involuntary servitude except in cases where it is used as punishment for a crime. Bramlette reassures Lincoln that he believes the decision will be overturned and that he has "not lost a single friend."
