The University of South Carolina Libraries presents an October 25, 1883 article, writer unknown, from the The Newberry Herald newspaper on Samuel Jones Lee's character and his reaction to the Supreme Court's ruling against the Civil Rights Act of 1875. According to the article, Lee - a formerly enslaved man South Carolina politician (R - SC) and attorney. According to the article, Lee "apprehended no evil effects to the colored race from the decision." The writer also claims that Lee expressed that "nowhere in the United States does a colored man enjoy so fully his civil rights as in this state."
